Our History

From the beginning, the Company founded by Colin Savage and continued by its present Directors has been developed into the number one provider of bespoke engineering solutions to the clients needs using traditional craft skills as well as the latest technological techniques.

1955


Founded by Colin Savage, Mid Kent Electrical Engineering began life repairing small electric motors for the surrounding area.

The first MKE workshop in Detling, Kent

1959


The original workshop was opened in Detling and was ideally situated to serve the developing paper industry in the area.

Proud to be part of the ever-growing MKE team, our engineers are always keen to promote the skills and depth we have as a company.

In the early days, the annual Kent County Show was one of the many places we were able to do this, presenting our services to local industries.

With our specialist engineering knowledge and experience, MKE has always had many unusual machines pass through our doors for repair and service. 

This Schrage motor, which was an early from of speed control for AC electric motors, is a great example of this.

With the increase in capacity, we have always been proud of our ever-growing fleet of vehicles.

Machining tasks and manufacturing

Machining tasks soon became a regular part of everyday life, not just for motor repairs, but manufacturing items when needed.

The Chatham Dockyard exhibition was a great way to showcase our capabilities, including new Sever motors, of which we were a distributor.

Workshop expansion in 1989

1989


The steady growth of the company went hand in hand with the continual expansion of the workshop.

1991


The continual development of staff and their skills has been a cornerstone of MKE’s progression.

With multiple apprentices taken on each year, we are keen to promote education in the workplace for the future of our industry.

Expanding workshop area

1997


The workshop has come a long way from where it started, with extra space from the continued expansion.

This allowed for separate motor rewind and repair areas, as well as an improved machine shop.

MKE ABB alliance partners

1999


We are proud to be one of the founding members, and part of the of what is now called the ABB Value Provider network.

Joining with a number of companies from across the UK, MKE helped form what was originally known as the ABB Alliance partner network, covering support and sales of motors and variable speed drives.

2001


With the new addition of many larger machines, MKE set its sights upon increasing the level of engineering support and capacity we could provide to our customers.

Following the acquisition of a second large unit in Sittingbourne, MKE doubled the size of the head office. 

This provided a greater scale of capacity and capability for our expanding customer’s base.

Many hours were put into planning the new layout of the second workshop before the set-up got underway.

Our grand opening of the second unit in Sittingbourne drew a lot of attention from our customers and partners, MKE even made the local news!

2010


Our machine shop continued to grow and develop in its capabilities, including CNC machining and specialist fabrication. 

This increase in capacity makes MKE’s machine shop one of the largest in the South.

2015


The Drives and Controls department moved into new premises as the scope of our services continued to develop.

Almost 70 years since opening its doors, MKE continues to be run as a family business. 

Evolving into one of the largest independent engineering organisations of its kind in the South, covering a wide array of electrical and mechanical services. 

The main repairs workshop has come a long way from where it began, now with multiple departments covering various specialties.
